ESSENTIAL ENERGY VEGETATION MANAGEMENT SAFETY REVIEW

BACKGROUND

Across NSW Essential Energy utilities several vegetation management contractors to maintain minimum clearance distances around its power line asset infrastructure. Following a series of significant incidents Leading Edge Safety Systems was engaged by Essential Energy to conduct an independent safety culture and behavior review of three vegetation management contractors to identify the underlying cultural drivers that shape safety behavior and procedural compliance. Site visits to observe vegetation management practices occurred at several location throughout the Far North and Mid North Coast regions. A suite of documentation was reviewed and structured interviews with staff and management were conducted across each of the contractors to identify safety improvement opportunities.

THE RESULT

Several practical strategies were identified around auditing, reporting and planning of work to enhance the collaborative relationship between Essential Energy and its vegetation management contract partners. These strategies were accepted by all parties.
